We’ve mastered visualizing complex strategies, and we want to share our vision for how to map a future worth creating.
“Broad framing is the strategic capability that offers long-term views of a dynamic from start to finish and visualizes how those pathways connect to, and intersect with, external domains – economic, political, social, environmental, and technological. In short, it’s a long-view combined with cross-domain analysis”
– Dr. Thomas P.M. Barnett
Broad framers translate strategy across domains and generations. They are horizontal thinkers versus domain-specific “drill down artists.” They often lead with influence vs. authority.
They are:
Visionaries for their organizations
Leaders in their industries
Mission-driven strategists

To bring the exponential power of broad framing and visual strategy to your organization’s mission.
Over the next 50 years, our world will experience exponential shifts in climate change, digital trade, demographics, and an emerging global middle class. The way these shifts will affect your organization and industry is unknown. Broad framing allows you to plan for these shifts by taking researched-based data on globalization and establishing a long-term visual strategy that aligns with your organization’s purpose, goals, and target audience to pioneer and thrive across the next half-century.
Dr. Barnett has worked in U.S. national security circles since the end of the Cold War, starting first with the Department of Navy's premier think tank, the Center for Naval Analyses. From there he moved to serve as a senior researcher and professor at the Naval War College in Newport RI, where he became a top assistant to Vice Admiral Arthur Cebrowski – the father of "network-centric warfare." After 9/11, Barnett served in Cebrowski's newly formed Office of Force Transformation in the Office of the Secretary of Defense as the Assistant for Strategic Futures. At the Pentagon, he developed a famous PowerPoint brief on globalization, international security, and military strategy, which later morphed into a bestselling book, The Pentagon's New Map: War and Peace in the Twenty-First Century (2004). Since leaving the government in 2005, Dr. Barnett has served as a senior executive in a series of technology-driven start-ups and political-risk consultancies. Barnett completed his "New Map" trilogy with: Blueprint for Action: A Future Worth Creating (2005), and Great Powers: America and the World After Bush (2009). Since 1998, Dr. Barnett has operated his own firm, Barnett Consulting LLC. He presently serves at Throughline Inc. as a Principal Business Strategist. He collaborated with Throughline’s graphic artists in creating his highly illustrated 2023 book, America’s New Map: Restoring Our Global Leadership in an Era of Climate Change and Demographic Collapse.
